How to generate a X.509 certificate

In this example we will generate a X.509 certificate using the Certificate Creation tool. This tool is for testing purposes only and the certificates produced are not meant for use within a production application.

To access the tool, use the Visual Studio Command Prompt.

This creates a test certificate and saves it to file

makecert myCertificate.cer

This creates a test certificate and saves it to the certificate store

makecert -ss myCertificateStore

This create a test certificate and a key container and then saves to file and the certificate store
